6 Telltale Signs it’s Time to Replace Your Boiler

Updated: Aug 14

Albertans are no strangers to harsh winters. We tough it out when we’re on the move, but many families rely on a functional boiler system to ensure that their homes stay warm and comfortable through the worst of it.

If you find yourself frequently repairing your boiler, it may be time to invest in a replacement. At Modern Air & Water, we’ve seen it all! So, we’ve compiled the top six signs that should prompt you to consider installing a new boiler.

It’s too old

If your boiler is more than 15 years old, it likely needs to be replaced. Since technology has evolved in recent years, it’s probably not as efficient as it could be. As your boiler becomes obsolete, spare parts will also be increasingly hard to come by as well. We carry a comprehensive range of products and can help you choose the perfect system for your home’s needs.

It’s too slow

A boiler should heat up within seconds. If yours is taking longer, even with regular maintenance or after attempted repairs, then it’s really not worth spending more money on trying to fix it. Instead, start looking into a replacement.

It’s been leaking

Leaks should be dealt with as soon as possible, but they can also be fairly expensive to resolve. In some cases, especially if the part needed for the repair is hard to find (as is the case with older boiler systems), it may make more sense to just replace the boiler in its entirety. You’ll have a reliable new system, and you’ll save money in the long run.

It’s become inefficient

If you’ve noticed a steady rise in your heating costs, it probably means your boiler is working too hard and thereby wasting fuel. While repairs are possible, you may want to consider a replacement. An inefficient boiler is expensive in the long run and investing in a newer model will result in a smaller heating bill (and less money spent on repairs!).

It’s inconsistent

A difference in temperature between rooms could indicate an issue with your boiler’s controls. Similarly, if the temperature within the room is inconsistent or changes when you haven’t adjusted the thermostat, there’s a problem. If it can’t be fixed for a reasonable price, you should replace your boiler.

Its flame is yellow

Normally, a boiler’s flame is blue. If yours is yellow, it means there’s carbon monoxide in the area. Since carbon monoxide is odourless, a leak can easily go unnoticed without a detector. This gas is also extremely dangerous and potentially fatal if inhaled. Another sign of carbon emission is black soot. If you notice a yellow flame, and/or black soot, please give us a call immediately, 24/7, at 780-475-6484.
