Do you want cleaner, safer drinking water? If so, a reverse osmosis (RO) system may be just what you need. This water filtration process can be used to supply your home with great-tasting water on demand. Here’s everything you need to know.

How does reverse osmosis work?

Reverse osmosis systems work by forcibly pushing water through a series of filters and a semi-permeable membrane. Since the membrane has very small pores, it ensures that only water molecules can pass through and that harmful contaminants and other impurities are left behind. These pollutants are then washed down the drain while the clean, filtered water is collected in a small storage tank to ensure you always have pure water on demand.

RO systems are most often installed at a point of use, such as under a kitchen or bathroom sink, or hooked up to a fridge or ice maker. However, they aren’t generally suitable for whole-home use as they can dramatically reduce water pressure.

How is reverse osmosis different from other home water filtration systems?

There are many types of water filtration systems available, and all have their advantages and limitations. For example, UV filters eliminate bacteria and viruses but not particles or sediment. Activated carbon filters, on the other hand, remove sediment and chlorine but not minerals or dissolved inorganic compounds.

Reverse osmosis systems, however, can do it all. They use a combination of filters to effectively remove sediment, minerals and salt, as well as chemicals, heavy metals and bacteria from your drinking water.

The benefits of reverse osmosis

Here are three of the biggest advantages of investing in an RO system for your home:

  1. It saves you money. Investing in a reverse osmosis system means you don’t have to buy bottled water. Although RO systems require an upfront investment, they provide long-term savings and are better for the environment.
  2. It provides healthier water. RO systems effectively remove up to 98 per cent of dissolved solids and contaminants commonly found in tap water to prevent you and your family from ingesting pollutants that could be harmful to your health.
  3. It provides better-tasting water. Reverse osmosis systems effectively remove bad tastes and odours from your drinking water to make your meals and beverages taste better.
