Do you use a boiler to heat your home or business? If so, it’s good to know when it’s time to call a professional to perform maintenance or repairs and keep it running efficiently.

Here’s an overview of common signs your boiler needs repair & what you need to know.

It’s important to identify small problems before they become major repairs. In fact, neglecting regular maintenance can cause your boiler to break down unexpectedly, costing you considerable time and money. Here are five telltale signs your boiler requires maintenance or repairs.

1. Water leak

If you notice water pooling around your boiler, you likely have a faulty pressure valve or seal. Fortunately, this is a relatively easy fix. However, if left unchecked, even a minor water leak can lead to rust damage and wreak havoc on the electrical components within your boiler. Therefore, it’s best to call an expert to promptly find and fix the problem.

2. Inadequate heat

Does it take a long time for your property to heat up? If so, the culprit could be low water pressure or a faulty zone valve or pump. Before calling a professional, ensure your thermostat is set to the correct temperature. If your thermostat is working fine, you may have an issue with your gas supply or condensate pipe.

3. Faulty pilot light

If the pilot light on your boiler goes out, don’t panic. It’s possible that it was blown out by a draft. However, if it’s difficult to re-light or won’t stay lit, there could be a problem with the gas thermocouple, flame sensor or ignitor.

When your boiler is functioning normally, the pilot light should burn a deep blue colour. If the pilot light is yellow or orange, too much air is getting into the system, which could cause carbon monoxide to be released into the air. This is a serious problem that should be dealt with by a professional as soon as possible.

4. Loud sounds

Boilers are designed to operate as quietly as possible. Therefore, if you suddenly hear loud sounds coming from your boiler, it may be cause for concern. Banging or gurgling sounds could indicate that there’s air in the system, the pipes are poorly fitted or excess mineral buildup in the tank.

In addition, whirring, thumping or whistling sounds could mean that the heat pump or heat exchanger is broken or that there’s a blockage in the system. It’s best to call a professional to get to the root of the problem.

Lastly, investing in regular maintenance can prevent any minor issues from becoming serious problems.
